The size of your lawn

An important factor for any lawnmower purchase, a general rule of thumb is that the bigger the lawn, the bigger your lawnmower should be. For very small lawns we recommend a push cylinder mower, which will give the finest cut to your lawn using a combination of blades for a scissor-like cutting action. Electric mowers are a good fit for small and medium lawns. For smaller lawns of up to 300 square metres we recommend a cutting width of 12-17 inches which is around 30-43cm. For medium lawns of up to 600 square metres we recommend a larger cutting width of 17-19 inches or 43-48cm.

The finish of your lawn

For those looking for a striped finish, precise borders and edging, you would need a cylinder or rear roller rotary mower. Fine or informal lawns which do not need patterns can use any four wheeled mower where a specific cut is not required.

Price

Electric lawnmowers are usually cheaper than petrol, powered by mains electricity. Make sure you have an electricity point outside that you can use, or an extension cord. You may also see some cordless battery-powered lawn mowers. These are hassle free and have all of the benefits of a battery powered mower without the cable. As they use a modern lithium ion battery, they are more expensive and generally lighter than their corded brothers. Petrol lawnmowers are the best choice for large gardens where a cable is unsuitable. They are more expensive but also much more powerful and faster. As they do not use a cable, they are also much easier to manoeuvre around your garden.
