Looking After Your Upholstery

Protecting and caring for your upholstery

Fabric & Leather upholstery in a normal home environment should require little attention and cleaning should only be done when necessary.

For regular maintenance, dust or vacuum occasionally, or in hot, dry weather, use a soft, slightly damp cloth, and wipe gently without rubbing.

If the leather starts to feel overly dry, we recommend you apply a small amount of Leather treatment or protection cream with a cotton cloth, allow the leather to dry, then polish gently with a dry cotton cloth. This will restore the natural feel and suppleness of the leather. The use of non-recommended cleaners could irreparably damage the leather, causing cracks and discolouring. Always pay attention to the products instructions and test on an inconspicuous area first.

If you have a spillage on your upholstery, immediately dab off excess liquids and solids, always work from the edge of the stain inward to avoid spreading. Do not use an abrasive cloth or rub excessively.

We highly recommend that the fabric or leather is not put in direct exposure to sunlight and heat, as this may cause the colour to fade unevenly over time. Should the product get wet, remove any residual water immediately with a paper towel and allow to dry naturally.

Avoid placing your furniture close to heat sources, such as heaters or radiators.

To ensure that your upholstery keeps its shape we recommend regular maintenance of the seat and back cushions especially. Both attached and removable cushions should be plumped regularly to prevent sagging. Also, if your upholstery has loose cushions that can be rotated periodically, this also helps to maintain the shape and helps to ensure equal wear of your cushions.

Leather Types Explained

Using only the finest quality leathers sourced from around the world, each hide is completely natural and the variations in shade, grain and texture add to its charm. Each piece will take on its own character and is completely unique.

Being a natural product, each hide is individual. It is quite possible that these unique features will be present on your new furniture when it is delivered to you. These features are appreciated and enjoyed by discerning owners of leather upholstery.

  1.

    1. Healed scars, variations in graining, wrinkles, veining and differences in tone are all quite normal and proof of the natural origin of leather.

  1.

    1. ‘Puddling’ of seats will occur with use, with the stretching of leather and settlement of the interiors. It is recommended to rotate use of seating areas to maintain an even appearance.

  1.

    1. Fibre filled cushions require ‘dressing’ and ‘plumping’ after delivery, as settlement may have occurred during shipment. Cushions then need to be ‘dressed’ regularly to maintain the furniture’s appearance and prevent flattening of the fibre filled interiors.

  1.

    1. Leather can be sensitive to oily substances to include normal hand and hair grease. We suggest wiping over arm pads and head cushions, especially on high-backed reclining furniture, with a damp cloth on a weekly basis to help prevent discolouration.

    1. ‘Waxed’ and full ‘Aniline’ leathers will mark to give an ‘aged authentic’ look. Due to natural variations in the manner in which the dye is absorbed into these leathers, it may show significant variations in shade and texture on the same hide. It is therefore not always possible to achieve a uniform match between adjoining panels.

  1.

    1. Waxed and full aniline leathers have little or no surface protection. They absorb moisture and breathe, hence their very soft, glove-like feel. We would advise that you apply the protection cream, prior to use and on a regular basis as instructed on the product, 2-4 times a year. This will increase durability and resistance against stains, spots, grease marks and spillages.

    1. Dye transfer may occur from certain items of clothing, which is particularly noticeable on lighter colour leathers – some clothing nowadays is not as colourfast as years gone by i.e. jeans – this problem is not a fault of the leather furniture.
